Pacific Council Offices

A Pacific Council conference call exchnage on the conclusion of the nine-month standoff between West Coast dockworkers and their employers, averting a shutdown of 29 ports that could have cost the U.S. economy $2 billion a day.

The call featured The Honorable Mickey Kantor, Co-Chairman of the Pacific Council, Partner at Mayer Brown LLP, and former United States Secretary of Commerce and Trade Representative, and Mr. Hyun-myung Kim, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles. Mr. Erik D. Smithweiss, Partner at GDLSK LLP, served as moderator.

Our speakers considered the impact of the costly slowdown in operations at the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports - the first and second busiest in the United States respectively - on the nation's international trade partners, examined its effect on California's economy, and offered their thoughts on how to prevent a similar crisis from taking place in the future.
