Teleconference Call

The third installment of our Behind the Front Page summer teleconference series focused on the efforts of the United States and China to shore up influence in Latin America and Africa, and how each continent can benefit from this competition between superpowers.

The call featured Ambassador David Shinn, Adjunct Professor of International Affairs at George Washington University, and Ambassador Princeton N. Lyman, Senior Adviser to the President at the United States Institute of Peace. Mr. Alexandre Moore, Programs Associate at the Pacific Council, served as moderator.

As China continues to ascend as a global superpower, its rivalry with the United States for influence abroad seems only likely to increase. Nowhere is this more evident than in Africa and Latin America. Our participants debated and discussed how exactly the U.S. and China competition in each continent takes form, how this competition has affected these regions, and which side is poised to "win" this battle for influence.
