Abe Sofaer immigrated to the US from India at the age of 14. He served in the US Air Force from 1956 to 1959. He received a BA in Intellectual History from Yeshiva College in 1962. In 1965 he graduated from NYU Law School where he was editor-in-chief of the Law Review and Outstanding Graduate of his class. He clerked for Judge J. Skelly Wright of the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit, and for Justice William J. Brenna, Jr., of the US Supreme Court. He was a federal prosecutor in the SDNY, and a law professor at Columbia Law School. He served as a US District Judge in the SDNY from 1979 to 1985, and as The Legal Adviser of the US State Department from 1985 to 1990. After 4 years of private practice at Hughes Hubbard & Reed in DCl, he became the George P. Shultz Senior Fellow at The Hoover Institution, Stanford University, where he currently is Emeritus. He has written and worked in the fields of international law, criminal law, litigation, negotiation, and diplomacy.
