Webinar
Dial in on November 6 at 10 am PT for a timely discussion of global trends in youth radicalization and current approaches to protecting vulnerable youth and building long-term resilience. This webinar will feature Lila Green, Founder of The Particle Accelerator (TPA) and current Pacific Council member, and Brad Galloway, Coordinator at the Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism.
Increasingly shaped by online environments, youth radicalization has become a recruitment tool for extremist groups using social media, gaming platforms, and messaging apps to spread propaganda and misinformation. Key trends include the rise of ideologically fluid movements that blend elements of far-right, religious, or conspiracy-based extremism; the use of memes and pop culture to appeal to younger audiences; and the targeting of youth experiencing social isolation, identity struggles, or grievances.
Why it’s important:
- An April memo produced by DHS and Ohio’s STACC found that domestic violent extremists, “create and disseminate violent content on youth-oriented platforms,” with some specifically calling on minors to commit violence before they become legal adults.
- Individuals associated with communities that promote nihilistic worldviews accounted for two-thirds of all deaths and nearly two-thirds of all injuries in attacks and attack plots. Many perpetrators and suspects in the category were juveniles: historically not a characteristic demographic for extremist violence, according to the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD).
- James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, invited the heads of Discord, Steam, Twitch, and Reddit to testify following the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
