On Wednesday, December 10, at 6 pm PT, the Pacific Council and Miry’s List are partnering to co-host a special holiday gathering for the New Arrival Supper Club, an immersive community dining experience that will bring the Pacific Council community and newly arrived refugee families together around a shared table. This event offers an opportunity to connect across cultures, hear personal stories of emigration, and learn how our community can support resettling families.
A customary Syrian dinner will be prepared by the Kanjo family, new Americans from Syria, and guests will enjoy traditional Afghan music performed by Mustafa Samayee. Please note, this is a family-friendly event.
This event is made possible through the generous support of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.
Registration is now closed.
Featured Chef
Maysaa Kanjo is a new Californian from Homs, Syria, and a founding chef of the New Arrival Supper Club program.
Maysaa arrived with her husband and their 5 children, fleeing from Syria to Jordan in 2012 at the height of the Syrian civil war, eventually arriving in the U.S. in 2016. The Kanjo family owned a renowned bakery in Homs for over 100 years.
Maysaa's favorite classic Syrian dishes are Fattoush salad and Maqloube, the famous "upside-down" rice, a Syrian staple. The Kanjo family is thrilled to be able to share their story and native cuisine with their new American neighbors.
About New Arrival Supper Club
The New Arrival Supper Club is a culinary social-impact experience by Miry's List that directly counteracts the hardships of resettlement by creating space for newly arrived refugees to participate, share, and build connection with their new neighbors. It offers resettling chefs a platform to share their culture and gain income, become visible community contributors, and foster human connection beyond language. By gathering communities around a shared meal, the program bridges divides and humanizes the refugee experience.
For those interested in supporting a newly arrived family this holiday season, please consider purchasing an item from the Moradi family’s wishlist here.
The Moradi family, Mr. and Mrs. Moradi and their two sons, ages 7 and 12, recently began a new chapter in Modesto, California, after resettling from Afghanistan. Mr. Moradi brings valuable experience as a finance assistant, and Mrs. Moradi cares for their boys at home while actively improving her English through local classes. Please join us in giving the Moradis a warm welcome to our community!
