Mr. Joshua Lockman

Mr. Joshua Lockman is an International Law Lecturer at USC Law School.  From 2008 to 2010, he was an Associate at Latham & Watkins LLP in Los Angeles.  He received a B.A. from Yale University in 2004 and graduated from USC Law in 2008.  Josh serves on the National Security and Middle East Member Committees at the Pacific Council.  He has been published in the Los Angeles Times, the Huffington Post and Foreign Policy Digest, and is currently conducting research on the impact of the rise of Iran and Turkey on Israeli-Arab relations.  Josh additionally serves on the Advisory Board for HYPE, a non-profit organization that works with low-income middle school students in the Los Angeles area.

What do you believe is currently the most pressing foreign policy issue?

The most pressing foreign policy issues with which we are currently faced include: the myriad of challenges emanating from the Middle East, including the Arab spring and the spread of democracy in the Middle East, the persistent threat of terrorism, and the dramatic impact of popular uprisings on U.S. allies and adversaries alike.

What are you reading right now?

I am currently reading The Ghosts of Martyrs Square: An Eyewitness Account of Lebanon's Life Struggle by Michael Young.  It is a fascinating analysis of Lebanon since the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

What are some of your favorite global resources online?

Both Foreign Policy and Foreign Affairs are excellent resources -- also, I use Twitter to follow on-the-ground experts and journalists covering the Middle East.

Why did you become a member of the Pacific Council?

I became a member of the Pacific Council in order to enrich my understanding and awareness of global affairs and their impact on California.  Over the last four years, I have been privileged to attend and participate in many Pacific Council events and panels, which has been a great experience.
